Community-Based Management in Canada's Public Forests

For Westwind Forest Stewardship Inc, responsible forest management has been a cornerstone of operation from day one. In just four short years, the fledgling company has successfully demonstrated its ability to practice what it preaches, leading to the certification of 855,000 hectares of public forest in Canada under the rigorous Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) system.

Westwind is a community-based not profit forest management company whose propose is to manage the publicly owned French/Severn Forest in a way that is ecologically and socially sustainable. It is committed to serving the interests of a wide range of forest users and visitors, while at the same time attempting to ensure a healthy, sustainable and responsive forest industry.

"FSC certification is a milestone for us," said Wilf Cosby, Chair of Westwind. "After taking over management jus four years ago, we have third-party confirmation of the merit of our management plan. The audit that led to the certification spells out some of the issues that we still have to deal with, but this recognition means we are right on track".
