Policy & Standards Development Process

The Policy and Standards Unit (PSU) develops FSC policies and standards, and provides guidance and interpretation where necessary. There are five types of core documents produced by the Policy and Standards Unit. For more information on the development and approval process of each document, click on the link.

FSC International Policy

FSC International Standard

FSC Guidance Document

FSC Advice Note

FSC Discussion Paper

FSC Guidance Document

A document that gives additional information on how to use a policy or standard.

Guidance documents provide supplementary information to facilitate the implementation of an associated standard or policy.

Example: FSC guidance on the interpretation of FSC Principles and Criteria for small and low intensity managed forest operations (SLIMF) (FSC-GUI-60-100, under development)

Guidance documents are developed in response to questions submitted to the FSC Policy and Standards Unit (PSU) by other FSC Units and/or by certification bodies or FSC National Initiatives. The Policy and Standards Unit may decide to develop a guidance document or an Advice Note.
