Forest Certification
FSC Forest Management (FM) certification is a voluntary process for verifying responsible forest practices in all type of forests and plantations. FSC FM certification is based on internationally accepted FSC Principles and Criteria.
This type of certification involves an inspection of the forest management unit or plantation by an independent FSC accredited certification body. If the forest or plantation complies with FSC Principles and Criteria, which require environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable practices, it is issued a certificate.
FM certification is carried out against FSC accredited standards developed at the national or regional level. Where no FSC accredited national or regional standards exist, FSC accredited certification bodies can use FSC accredited generic standards.
FM certification requires that forest management is compliant with national legislation, respects local use rights and indigenous peoples’ rights, maintains the ecological functions of the forest and its biodiversity, enhances the economic viability, and carries out adequate management planning and monitoring of the operation.
Costs for certification
The costs and timescale for FM certification vary a lot depending on the size and complexity of the woodland. FSC has developed different models for small or low intensity managed forests and small forests that may wish to become certified by joining a group certification of similar forest owners.
