Plantations concerns to be discussed at September open meeting in Bonn - June 30th, 2004

The issues surrounding plantations and how FSC certification can improve plantation management will be on the agenda for the upcoming meeting "FSC and Plantations" on September 9, 2004 in Bonn, Germany. The one-day meeting is open to all people interested in the role that FSC certification can play in improving plantation management worldwide.

The deadline for registrations is August 13, 2004. Registration forms can be downloaded from the FSC Plantations website (www.fsc.org/plantations/index.htm) from July 2, or by writing to plantations@fsc.org. FSC can subsidize a limited number of participants to attend the meeting. To apply for a subsidy please fill in the registration form, explaining how your attendance would contribute to the meeting. If you are attending the FSC 10th Anniversary Conference and would also like to attend the plantations meeting, please indicate this on the conference application form.

This meeting will launch FSC's Plantation Review process. Over the next two years, FSC will meet with stakeholders around the world to view, review and discuss examples of the implementation of the FSC Principles and Criteria in plantations. The result of this review will be guidance on the implementation of the FSC Principles and Criteria to further improve global management of plantations.

Forest plantation management is a critical and controversial issue for the world's forests. FSC's Principle 10 for plantations was developed with the recognition by social, economic and environmental interests of the potential for plantations to play a positive role in forest management. The implementation of the FSC Principles and Criteria for plantation management, however, remains controversial. FSC members have agreed that FSC's experience with plantations should be reviewed.
