Brazil with one million hectares FSC certified Amazon native forest - August 6th, 2004

With the recent certification of over 700,000 ha of native forest according to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards, Brazil is moving forward to lead responsible forest management in natural forest in South America. The country now has 1,249,204 ha of FSC certified native Amazon forests and 1,051,669 ha of FSC-certified plantations, making a total of 2,297, 686 ha of certified forest.

"This result is a clear sign that FSC is meeting its goal of influencing responsible forest management in the tropics, demonstrates that there is a role for business in sustainable forestry, and recognizes the valuable contribution of communities and workers. These efforts are thanks to a lot of hard work and the collaboration between many sectors and peopleâ??.said Daniel Arancibia, Regional Representative for Latin America.

The newly FSC certified Amazon native forests in Brazil are: 545,535 ha belonging to Orsa Florestal, Jari Group (SCS-FM/COC-00075N) in the state of Pará; 4,924 ha belonging to Agroflorestal Vale do Guaporé (SW-FM/COC-284) in the state of Rondonia; and the expansion of the Cikel Brasil Verde (SCS-FM/COC-00031N)certified area to 248,899 ha in the state of Pará.
