FSC deeply concerned by tragic event at an FSC certified plantation - March 9th, 2007
FSC is deeply concerned by the tragic killing of Antonio Joaquim dos Santos, aged 32, in the evening hours of 26 February 2007 in Brazil, apparently at the FSC certified operation V&M Florestal, part of Vallourec & Mannesman Tubes.
FSC expects that the circumstances of this tragic incident will be promptly clarified by the local police and that all the necessary and appropriate legal actions will be taken. FSC also anticipates that all parties involved in the case will fully support the official investigations, so they can be concluded as soon as possible.
FSC immediately contacted the FSC accredited certification body (SGS) responsible, and expects SGS to fully assess this incident in relation to the FSC certified plantations of V&M Florestal without delay, and take all measures necessary.
ASI, FSC’s accreditation program, is closely following SGS’s work on this case and, if necessary, will conduct a field audit to verify and confirm SGS’s conclusions on this incident. FSC Brasil, the FSC National Initiative in the country, is also closely following the case and providing support where appropriate.
