Join FSC at COP15 in Copenhagen

04 December 2009

Please join the Forest Stewardship Council, the Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas de Guatemala and the Rainforest Alliance for a side event at COP 15 in Copenhagen.

Reducing Emissions from Forest Degradation:  FSC Certified Forest Management
With a case study from the Maya Biosphere Reserve

When: Wednesday, 16th December 2009, 11:00-12:30
Where:  “Niels Bohr” room, Bella Center

Given global demand for forest products, improving management of productive forest lands will be essential to addressing climate change and forest conservation. Mixing protective and extractive management practices can significantly reduce forest degradation if carried out to internationally-accepted social and environmental standards such as those of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Panelists will discuss:

  • Why improved forest management, which includes logging and non-timber forest product extraction, plays a pivotal role with respect to REDD.
  • Forest Stewardship Council certification: certifying social and environmental sustainability of managed forests.
  • Case study from Guatemala: How FSC-certified community forest management leads to lower forest degradation.

The event will be facilitated by Eric Palola of the National Wildlife Federation and feature presentations by:

  • Stefan Salvador, Policy Manager, Forest Stewardship Council
  • Claudia Santizo, Secretaria Ejecutiva, Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas de Guatemala
  • Jeffrey Hayward, Manager, Climate Initiative, Rainforest Alliance
