Current Projects
Certification of Forest Contractors (CeFCO)
Access to FSC certification and its benefits can be more challenging for small forest holders who often face cost and procedural barriers to certification. This three year project aims to facilitate certification of small private forests by developing tools for certification of forestry contractors. Learn more
Ecosystem Services
The claims made for well-managed ecosystem services in the formal and voluntary "green" markets have largely been unsubstantiated. This four year project will develop a reliable market-related tool for verifying claims related to ecosystem benefits such as carbon sequestration, watershed protection, biodiversity conservation, disaster risk prevention, and recreational services. Awareness raising, training and promotion will follow at the national and global level. Learn more
FSC / Fairtrade dual certification
Access to FSC certification and its benefits can be more challenging for communities who often face cost and procedural barriers to certification. This 18-month project aims to develop an affordable dual certification system for communities that will ultimately be incorporated into the existing FSC and Fairtrade certification systems. Learn more
Improved certification systems for tropical forest management
The project addresses two main issues. Certification is proving challenging in the tropics where management is technically difficult and the political and institutional support for responsible management has been historically weak. Certification is also more cost-effective for large companies compared to smaller forest enterprises. Learn more
PPP-NI - Strengthening FSC National Initiatives to improve tropical forest management
This four year project aims to optimize FSC’s influence on policy decision-making and regulatory institutions for responsible forest management, focusing on the Amazon, the Congo Basin and China. It will build and strengthen the capacity of FSC National Initiatives in these strategic regions to deliver services and enhance their ability to generate revenues. Learn more
Spaceborne mapping and monitoring services in forest management certification
The project will demonstrate a portfolio of spaceborne Earth Observation (EO) services on responsibly managed natural forests and plantations. These mapping and monitoring services will be combined with the estimation of forest biophysical characteristics such as tree height and diameter at breast height, using radar sensors. Learn more
