Gerês community areas: Community-led biodiversity conservation

Gerês: An example of the biodiversity and beauty of Portuguese forests

The forests of Gerês represent a remarkable example of the biodiversity and beauty of Portuguese forests, with emblematic forest species like oaks, cork oaks, and strawberry trees. Attractive Cascade, the forest steward leading this work, needs further support to control the risk of forest fires, ever increasing because of climate change.

Cork oaks in the Montados: Carbon and biodiversity hot spot of Portugal

Agroforestry systems in the Montados forests

The forests in this project, called Montados, are agro-forestry systems – multifunctional areas where the main forest product sustaining the community is cork. The group of foresters, APFC, needs further support to continue sustaining this unique model of management, to combat the risks to the biodiversity and climate benefits they deliver.

Paiva Walkways: Biodiversity and recreation in the Magic Mountains of Portugal

Magic Mountains: in recognition of biodiversity, recreation and climate benefits

This project is located along the Paiva River and is included in the Natura 2000 network, a recognition of the tremendous value of its biodiversity, recreation, and climate benefits. The group of foresters 2BForest needs further support to continue restoring the natural forest cover of the area, heavily endangered by invasive species and forest fires.
